Michael: All right! A high score table! Little arcade games like this really need a high score table to give them the feel they need, I say. So Space 4000 gets props for including one. This is another asteroids variant that has you fighting other spaceships as you roam about and try and land on and mine resources from various planets. The inclusion of the mining makes for a great change in the pace of gameplay. I enjoyed this one.

Chris: Nice little space exploration game. I like the random generated ‘universe’, I like the highscore board. I don’t like spawning inside a planet.

Panayoti: This game is surprisingly intriguing. Impressively it includes a global high scores list (which naturally doesn’t work when your internet connection is disabled as it was during my testing). I think it suffers from perhaps being too ambitious so ultimately the pieces don’t come together in a tight package. The game definitely was a refreshing break from the other geometry wars style shooters with the planet mining component. It has a lot of potential though and definitely sparked my interest.

Absolutely fantastic game, definitely one of my top favorites of the competition. I think to call it an “asteroids variant” is a bit of an understatement — while the graphics are certainly Asteroids-inspired, the gameplay hearkens more to me of Star Control, Escape Velocity, or Privateer. I really enjoy that genre of games, and thoroughly enjoyed collecting my minerals here. The game makes me wish I could sell them off for money or upgrades. I liked how the enemy ships could blow up on the planets just like you could — to get a high score, I found that was by far the easiest way to do combat, and as such, I nary fired a shot. I would sometimes find myself getting lost in space, traveling for what seemed like minutes without ever seeing a planet or another ship. As such, either a more consistent scattering of planets, or a radar map would have helped, but that’s one of the few faults I find with the game. I think it’s great the time that you took to set up an online high score server — I don’t know how that gels with the rule of “no online loading of resources”, but I honestly hope they would let stuff like this slide (and even encourage it) — along with the ability to land on planets and collect resources, the high scoring was my other favorite part of the game. All told, well done!

It was a really good concept. It was a contender but the rotational controls are sloppy. Consistent, snappy rotation around the center of the player’s ship is where its at. Also a good addition to the game itself would have been just one line to randomize the color of the planets. Perhaps it didn’t make the budget cut..
