Author’s Readme

A being of pure ethereal anger hurls it’s rage energy down on a crowded city. Clearly, no-one will survive, but just how violently will the rage-beast’s fury crush the citizens out of their skins?

Only you can decide…

Finest Features:
– Ultrasnazzy colour-changing-rage-beast-thingie
– Beautiful photorealistic graphics
– Spectacular sounscape creates an auditory treat
– Vent your inner rage with unparalleled gameplay
– Tactical-depth inducing score system
– Highscore saved for you to savour forever
– In-game instructions, so clear you’ll never go wrong
– Restart button, should you go wrong
– Developer pimping link: I can build you stuff for cash
– Uberslim custom-optimised Mochibot tracking
– Exactly 4096 bytes of miraculous wonder

The core game with all the effects was written in about 3 hours. I then spent another 5 hours optimising about 500 bytes out of it to bring you sound! Please enjoy your sound effect as fully as you can, I toiled long and hard for it.

For the curious, I’ve left the original code that produced a different control system hanging around. To play, complete the comment block around the mouse controls and remove the comment block around the key controls. It might not still be under 4kb with alternative controls, mind.

I’ve also left you the original source of the game before I started any optimisation. It won’t run because various names etc have been changed on stage, but if you want to read through and try to learn from the code, you’ll find it a lot easier in the version where the variable names actually mean something in plain English.

Michael: This would be a hard game to beat for me, were it not for how short the experience is. You play a brilliantly abstracted smoke monster entity (think ABC’s Lost, actually). Your goal is to launch yourself into the air and pound down on the civilians scurrying below to hit them for maximum impact. Problem is, there’s only 100 of them. And you can wipe that number out with 3 or 4 good hits. Too short, but very sweet.

Chris: I really like the ‘fog’ monster, very nice effect. Game is quite simple, reminds me of a Kloonigame. Feels like it needs some sort of progression.

Panayoti: Attack of the Rage Beast was the best named game in the bunch. The gameplay in AotRB is decent, but where it really shines is in the presentation. From the little people milling about, to the organic feel of the rage beast, the game really just feels alive. The background even has scrolling clouds! There’s definitely a lot of love in this entry and it was a blast to play.

The attention to detail in this one is amazing — the animated clouds, the twinkling stars, the animated people, the thudding “boom” sound, and the top-notch centerpiece of the rage beast, who even changes color from game to game. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and sadly just wished that I felt that I had more control (very hard to know how to get the rage beast to go faster — he felt naturally sluggish), and wished that I had more challenges or goals to achieve and work towards. Even so, it’s easily one of the most beautiful games in the competition, and I thoroughly enjoyed the feel and experience that you bottled up in this game. Top notch stuff, and an excellent testament to your talents!
